Medicare Provider Number
Medicare Australia allocates Medicare provider and prescriber numbers to medical practitioners to provide a method of identifying the place from which a medical service was provided.
All General Practitioners consulting in a private practice are required to have a Medicare Provider Number to access fees for service payments from Medicare for services provided. Overseas doctors (including New Zealand GPs) have restrictions placed on access to Medicare Provider Numbers. This is known as the Medicare Provider Number 10 Year Moratorium.
Exemptions to these restrictions can be obtained depending on the location where you are practicing and will usually mean you need to work in an outer metro, coastal or regional area. The 10 Year Moratorium can be reduced to 5 years or as few as 3 years by working in a regional or remote area and becoming vocationally qualified. Once all the requirements for the reduction have been met the General Practitioner will be able to work anywhere in Australia.
Locumotion will help organise a Provider Number for you prior to starting employment. This usually takes two to three weeks from when your Medical Board registration has been processed.
