Am I Eligible To Work In Australia?

There are some basic requirements that all International Medical Graduate’s (IMGs) must meet in order to work in Australia.

English Language Proficiency

All IMGs will need to satisfy the Australian Medical Council (AMC) English language proficiency requirements. However, where an IMG’s secondary education is completed in English an exemption from IELTS may be sort.

Qualifications & AMC

The MBBS or equivalent, (MB ChB, MD, MB BCh, BM BCh , BM BS, MB BChir) is the primary medical degree required to gain registration. Further qualifications that are looked on favourably are Family Medicine or O&G.

Mutually recognised qualifications

The RACGP recognises overseas trained doctors with qualifications equivalent to Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) or equivalent permitting General Registration & Fellowship ad eundum gradum.

Overseas trained doctors who hold the following qualifications are eligible for FRACGP ad eundum gradum whilst working in the Australian general practice setting:

  • The Certificate in Family Practice from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) who have also passed both parts of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination; or
  • Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) and the Certificate of the Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice (JCPTGP) UK; or
  • Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (FRNZCGP)
  • Graduates of the Irish college of General Practitioners (ICGP) holding the Membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP)

For International Medical Graduates who do not hold these qualifications, the successful completion of the Australian Medical Council (AMC) MCQ examination is required. For more details about the AMC and MCQ Exam please visit www.amc.org.au.

Experience

It is recommended to register as a General Practitioner in Australia that you have a minimum of 5 years experience in General Practice. The more experience in environments similar to that in Australia General Practice, the more suitable the Medical Board will deem your experience and the earlier and quicker the registration process will be.

If your experience is mainly in hospital positions you may consider working in one of Australia’s public hospitals for a period before applying for a General Practice position
