Adrian Kenny, UK
Anyone fancy getting out of the UK and joining the flood of British docs here in Oz? It's straightforward to apply, and if you have MRCGP you can become a Fellow of the RACGP by reciprocal rights, leading directly to Vocational Registration (i.e. no exams!).
I'm currently working on the north side of Brisbane, and yet again the sun is shining today. Nearest beach 15 minutes drive. Great houses, schools, and shops. Smooth roads, no litter, public barbecues in parks, and the right attitude to work/life balance.
I'm contracted to Locumotion, which runs sites across Oz. Essentially Locumotion provides the building, nurses, staff, and administrative support in exchange for a percentage of your billings, while you work as a GP with Clinical Sovereignty.
Locumotion has a UK expatriate GP, Tim Haggett, visiting the UK shortly on a recruiting mission. If you'd like to meet him, or just obtain further details of how it all works, please contact Mairead here. Mairead will be happy to send you some information, and arrange a meeting with Tim if required.
Chris Jones, UK Dr Chris Jones - Harbourtown Medical Centre, QLD
I moved with my wife and two young children to the Gold Coast from the UK a year ago, on a sponsored visa through Locumotion. I work with three other GPs, and our surgery is busy, friendly and well run. I am able to negotiate my own consulting hours (42 per week), and these revolve around my own sporting interests and family. The pay is item of service based, so the busier I am, the more lucrative it is.
There are no practice management problems for me to get involved with and QUOF/Practice Based Commissioning haven't yet arrived from the UK. Having the MRCGP automatically entitles me to the FRACGP, and this together with the sponsored visa allowed us to obtain permanent residency after being here six months. This was a big bonus to us, because being 47 years old when we arrived, I was too old to apply for an emigration visa independently.
The relaxed, informal lifestyle brought us to Australia and we are all thriving here; We're heavily involved with the Surf Club, can easily afford to send the children to a private school and are looking forwards to building our own home here on the Coast.
At the moment, it's the middle of winter here; 22 degrees, sunny and we're off to the beach.....
